Toothbrushes

Internet pundits now suggest that "...more folks globally own cell phones than toothbrushes." I didn't make that up. Google it. Incredible. Everyone knows more people than ever before are online. Global MP3 downloads are said to have tripled in just the past year to a staggering 6.7 million per week! One estimate puts it at 87 percent of the world's population having a mobile account, and with more people globally owning mobile accounts than own personal computers, this has to mean cell phones are the instrument of choice. More than two thirds of all new car purchases originate online, your local public library freely checks out eBooks by authors Connelly and Grisham for 21 days at a time, and the FBI now devotes a full third of its resources to combating cyber crime, as the globe doesn't just visit online, but practically lives there. With over 300,000 mobile apps and over 8 trillion texts moving through the airwaves in 2011; with tablet use nearly doubling during the same period and Apple selling a record number of iPhones (devices that not only tell you where to go for dinner, but literally literally -- dialogue with you on your choices of both cuisine and travel routes), the world has hugely and firmly embraced the personal electronic ethic. Yup, it's happened. The lives of virtually everyone on the planet have become “hardwired” to a 2 ½ x 5 ½ inch chunk of really smart plastic! But apparently not the kind with bristles on the end...

You remember that, do you? What did you think of the report that more folks own cell phones than own toothbrushes? Perhaps you're not old enough for the personal digitization of the globe to seem so impactive.
